Urban Debate League

After weeks of preparation and practice, our Debate Mate Team competed in their first national competition: The Urban Debate League (which consisted of 20 schools from across the UK with teams ranging from 11-18 years old). The teams met virtually to take part in two debates: ‘This house believes that politicians have a right to a private life’ and ‘This house would ban disciplinary measures in schools’.

The debate topics were tough but our teams were tougher.

The team harnessed every moment of their planning time to share ideas, work together and craft compelling arguments. Not only were their ideas great but they were presented with passion and charisma. The judges expressed how impressed they were with the maturity of thought and striking confidence of Highbury Fields Students.

Their team work and resilience paid off and Highbury Fields School won half of their debates.

Shahana (Y10) commented: It was so exciting to be in a competition and really challenge myself. It’s definitely given me the confidence to stand up for what I believe.

Mr Fox commented: A huge congratulations to the debate team who worked incredibly hard to achieve this result.
