Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is an industry which draws upon 3 subject areas: Biology, Psychology and Sociology. The Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care is the equivalent of 3 A levels and is a full time course.

The course is designed to equip you with the skills that are required to work in a range of professions such as social work, nursing, childcare, working with the elderly and supporting people with disabilities. Understanding stages of development and health and social care values, underpin every role in the wide ranging Health and Social Care industry.

The Health and Social care qualification also prepares students for careers in a variety of other sectors by equipping them with communication and organisational skills plus the ability to present ideas clearly. The skills they develop on this course will ensure that students are valued by future employers.

Work placements

During the two year course students are required to complete a range of work placements which amounts to a minimum of 100 hours. Only 10 hours must be done in a child care setting with the remaining time to be spent in any other health and social care setting such as a GP surgery, a Hospital or a Home for the Elderly.

By undertaking placements in care settings, students will be able to link theory to professional practice. Students will also be able to recognise good social care practice, develop their reflective practice skills and understand the importance of ensuring that there are always professional boundaries in place.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including passes in English and Mathematics.

Progression

The Level 3 BTEC National in Health and Social Care provides much of the underpinning knowledge for the National Occupational Standards in Health and Social Care and consequently acts as a robust introduction to both sectors. It prepares learners for higher education as well as immediate employment in either the Health or Social Care industries.

Our previous students over the past 4 years have achieved well above their targets. While some have gone onto Apprenticeships in Childcare or Business related, the majority have pursued Higher Education at universities to study degrees in nursing, midwifery, social work, child care and teaching, psychology, criminology and sociology.
