Matilda - the production!
On the 10th and 11th May, Highbury Fields’ produced their first musical in over three years, ‘Matilda’. The school version of the hit musical is based on the Roald Dahl story and has been adapted for stage by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin.
Throughout the spring term, we had 18 committed students from Years 7-10 working hard on their singing and dancing, creating costumes and props, learning lines, attending after school rehearsals, and practising their musical parts in order to produce the high quality of performance. The cast were exceptional, showing a professional attitude towards both the process and production that we, in the performing arts and school, expect.
Both performances were sold-out and had parents, children, staff, and governors really engaging with the story of Matilda Wormwood and the dreaded Miss Trunchbull (played with zeal by Nusayba in Year 10). There were also some very impressive performances, from Jenna as the hilarious Mr Wormwood, as well as our other Year 7 debutants, Yousra and Flora, as the circus performers. Our Year 9 student, Caitlin, was an outstanding Matilda, a part that really could not have been played by anyone else. Parents were extremely complimentary about the show commenting on the quality from both performers and the musicians on show. Our musicians, led by Simon Henry and supported by Han Bee, were amazing and dealt with the tricky score of the show. A big thank you to Ms Olise for being our musical director, alongside our other peripatetic music teachers and drama teachers, who ensured the standard throughout, was set high.
This production really highlighted the wealth of creativity within the school and its exemplary commitment to developing young performers for the future!
